TIS Sisterhood – History

Tifereth Israel Synagogue has been a part of San Diego's Jewish community since 1905. As the congregation grew, its women played an important role in strengthening synagogue life through hospitality, celebrations, holiday traditions, fundraising, and acts of service — first through the Ladies Auxiliary, formed in 1911, and later the Daughters of Israel.

In 1948, the same year Tifereth Israel moved to its new home on 30th and Howard Streets, Anne Ratner gathered 23 women to found what became the modern Tifereth Israel Sisterhood, which quickly grew to 105 members.

From that first meeting, Sisterhood was built on friendship, leadership, and a deep commitment to community — a strength that remains with us more than 75 years later. What began as a traditional auxiliary has evolved into an integral part of the heart and soul of the Tifereth Israel community.

Today, Sisterhood touches every part of a congregant's journey — supporting the Preschool, Torah School, and Camp Ramah scholarships; hosting Shabbat hospitality and Kiddush; running Kiddush Katering and Gift Card Sales; and offering countless programs that celebrate, comfort, and strengthen our synagogue family.

Sisterhood continues to honor its history while evolving to meet the needs of today's community. Rooted in tradition and inspired by service, it remains a place where friendships flourish, leaders emerge, and generations come together to strengthen Jewish life at Tifereth Israel.
